It is no secret that Costa Rica is very hard to give directions. This problem is even more evident when a foreign person has to walk to our country. This problem seems to have a very old story, which is to been passed down from generation to generation. Although for some people this is not problem but the truth is that if you must pay close attention, and gradually are more people who have the idea that address systems in Costa Rica is very messy. This informal way of giving directions is a real concern for many foreigners. The main cause of this problem is the lack of signs on streets and avenues.
It is in these cases where the maps or applications are a great help to give and receive directions. When we do not understand one direction or just know how to get to where we need to go and also do not have any friend to guide us we must use the facilities of the technology in this area.
A good example is the Waze application, which is one of the traffic and navigation applications based on the world's largest community. With this application starts can be attached to other drivers in your area who share real-time road and traffic information, saving everyone time and fuel in their daily commute.
Today there are many videos that talk about this issue some seem funny but others become offensive. It is curious to see how many people use buildings or even trees that existed in the past to give an address. Other times instead of mentioning the cardinal points, we say arriva fence or fence down instead of saying go north or south, on other occasions we help with your hands to give directions which is very confusing. We have reached the extreme that when someone gives us a direcion the right way that is as it should be, just do not understand.
But what really matters is how we are working to improve the business and we have a great task which is to learn gradually give better directions, timely and accurate addresses off.

I had been using too, and I think that is good tool for many drivers because it helps to arrive to many places that they don’t have any idea how to go and also the ones who want to arrive quickly to some place and avoid the awful traffic jams that are common in our country . This application is a great way to avoid getting lost, especially when you want to travel to new areas. If you are in a car, it can provide you data about your current location, weather and traffic jams. You can use it with your smartphone, tablet or whatever device that has access to internet. You can also use to determine your location using cell phone. However, the real benefit of Waze is navigation abilities. Waze is navigation app that one of its advantages is road info in a real- time, saving people’s time and gas money on their travels. With the app, you just open on your phone to contribute traffic and also if you want, share road reports on accidents, police traps, or any other thing there are passing in the way, it helps to give other users in the area an idea about what's coming. On the other hand, in the article was mentioning some aspects that I haven’t any idea. I used to think that this application was managed by google and with this article now I know that this people helping to map the country. Another incredible thing is that these people work lots of hours for free, only because they said “This work is addicting”. In my opinion they should be rewarded by the original company. But If they really want to do it for me is better because due to the application is free. I really like this app when I go to new place because it brings me all the information of how to arrive good to place that I want. For all these reason I recommend a lot this application to every driver who has a smartphone or tablet that in this season there are almost all, and the ones who like to discover new places and travel around the country and also outside.
I've never used this tool but it seems to be a interesting and useful app that drivers could use for their daily baisis, and tremendously helpful for costa rican people, who usually have to deal with many problems on the road, like car accidents, traffic jams and the biggest one, I think, that's related with traffic sings wich are not present in many of our roads. Waze brings plenty of advantages related to saving time, improving travel routes, basicly it became in a solution for our poor highway code where directions are given incorrectly, even though, they turn into a nightmare when somebody tries to understand or follow them. But this app could cause a bigger damage in our culture, if nowadays we are not able to give directions, we won't do it at all, because people couldn't explain how to get a place without an electronic device with internet service due to their brains capacity would decrease as long as this app would become a priority for drivers. Also a person could commit a crime and run away from the police and get away with it.
Drive in Costa Rica During the time, we had listened our parents how give directions, it is true, is not the best way to give a locations for a place, but we understand, many times when a foreign citizen is lost and ask for a direction, is almost impossible say him how to arrive there, but we try it. For us is very common say “from the “Antigua Galera” continues 200 meters on road”, Where the Antigua Galera is??? And where the new Galera is? I don’t now, and how can I arrive at the galera? Many people around the word (Costa Rica tourists) know that our country has this characteristic, and it´s curious, because just Costa Rica is like Costa Rica Is great know that a big app like Waze, works ok thanks to crowdsource, actuality San Jose city is getting tag by avenues and road, and it is a good advance for the community, it let us know a better destiny ubication. I think whole citys must been tagged, for start been a good and universal localization system. Is absolutely necessary. we need a good localization system, if we are traveling and occurs an accident, what would happen if you don’t know where you are? You can´t call 911 and say “we are at the road”. For this reason and other more is necessary change this system. Waze has been a biggest solution for this, because it give you a way go from a place to other. Personally I´m very happy for apps such as this that helps the day at day. When I started to drive, and I had to go to San Jose and my parents gave the directions. I thought “oh my God”. I don’t know anyplace there… for this reason I founded Waze, and now a day, I´m very relax because I know that I can go where ever I want, I just have to write the place name and it´s ready to go
In my personal opinion this app it's a big help to some persons, to know for example in where places there are a traffic jam, in Costa Rica that happens every day, because there are a lot of cars and the roads are very small. Other thing that we can know are the places where there are a traffic accident and what roads alternatives can take to arrive on a time to their houses or their works or only know the road that they have to take to arrive at the beach or a mountain. And of course is a more reliable source than the directions that the people in our country give. It's common that in places away of the down town the people don't give an exactly direction so they say things like: near the river x, and say the name of the place but if the person comes from other part of the country or other country don't understand anything! For those cases are very important to have this app...
Well in my opinion, I think that the ticos culture about the streets is very complicated and is a something that the goverment and some people are try to change but with few results. The use of apps like waze is soo useful because for this culture of the ticos is so hard to go a towns that never are stayed because sometimes the directions are very complicated and the references is about buildings and places that in the actuallity no exist. Other point about this is for change the culture of directions I think will be useful implement in the schools and highschools a time for talk about the good way to say directions in the city and explain how working the numbering of streets and avenues because in all my life never told me about this and sometimes with a little information we can know the numbering and use for futures references. Other thing that work for that, is the help for the government and government local with the labeling that I metioned in the first lines of my opinion, because in some towns is a few label about thet streets and is very imposible for the ticos use the system of the streets and avenues and maybe too use important names for call somes streets and of this way is more easy to learn for the ticos and lost less people with the directions in the future.

Well, for that reason to use the system Waze is a really good idea for us, it helps us to arrive to anywhere that we want, and that we do not know where it is, of course, we need to have a smartphone with internet, but nowadays, it is not a big problem. The best thing that this application has is that is free, and everybody can download it. I think that also Waze is a good application for the people that travel a lot, and that need to know where are located multiple venues (like restaurants, hotels, etc), and if those people are traveling in our country, it could be a very good tool for them. On the other hand, Waze also shows where is the traffic and where are police officers. For the first one, this system is really useful because if we are late or if we do not have patience to spend time in a traffic jam, with this we can find alternatives streets. The Second, can be a good idea, but also it could be a little problem, because if the driver was drinking alcohol, or maybe do not have a daily driving license, he can avoid the penalty. In my opinion, this app has more good things that bad things, and also it could do our life easier, especially because the way that we as “ticos” give addresses.

All the time that we are trying to give addresses, we have to search a very common place in order to establish a relation between that place and address.This is because we don´t use the name of the streets and the avenues so we need the name of a common place that is near to one that we are searching for. I think that the main problem with the way of given addresses that we use is that if we haven´t visited the place before, it´s going to be so difficult to find the "common" place that is near to the place that we are searching for, so that´s the moment in which we need a map or a tool that can guide us that place, so I think that it´s why apps like Waze are very useful to us. Another important aspect is the other option that Waze gives, that is about the possiblity to evaluate the job of the traffic police.
